CBT is a talking therapy that can help people with a wide range of problems.
The basis of CBT is understanding that the way in which we think can affect our mood and behavior.
During times of distress, people can think differently and sometimes negatively about themselves. This can affect their mood which can result in changes to their behaviour and they may find themselves unable to do things that they used to do.
CBT therapists aim to help each person identify and change their unhelpful thinking and behaviours. By doing this the person is assisted to increase their ability to change and manage their own life.
Sometimes talking about our problems to family and friends can be difficult as they may not understand or could be part of the problem itself. CBT offers the opportunity to talk to someone outside the normal circle of family and friends.
CBT also offers an opportunity to gain an understanding not only of how the problem developed but also what maintains that problem. This will also give an opportunity to develop positive rather than negative coping strategies. Thus enabling the client to make changes and help them to manage their own issues.
